Return to the main Kaweah River Rafting Page
The Kaweah river can be really challenging at higher flows, and previous Class 4 paddling experience is required, with strong swimming skills a must.
We meet you in the town of Three Rivers for your Kaweah River rafting trip, which is located close to the gateway of Sequoia NP. Plenty of options for camping and accommodations the night before.
The put-in is just downstream from the confluence of the East Fork Kaweah River and is almost a mile further upstream than the put-in used by many outfitters. This gives an additional 3 rapids. ‘Gateway Rapid’ is a 250 yard Class 4+ boulder slalom, followed by a Class 4 ten foot drop called ‘The Chute’, and then ‘Osterizer’, another Class 4+ rapid. Many more wild rapids follow like ‘Willows’, ‘Bumper’, ‘Powerhouse’, ‘Suicide Falls’, the boat launching ‘Chair’ rapid and others.
After a calmer stretch through the town of Three Rivers and a stop for lunch, the pace picks up again as we take on the ‘Slickies’, (a unique river feature you will always remember) which is a polished granite slalom that surfs one way, then another, while swirling around. The two biggest drops, Upper Slicky and Lower Slicky, are about a hundred yards apart. There are multiple Class 3 rapids after this and the pace is still fast with few eddies. Depending on the level of Lake Kaweah, you might also get to run the Class 4 rapids of Upper and Lower Holiday AKA Washing Machine if taking out at at the boat ramp.
