Return to the main South Fork American River Rafting Page
The South Fork American River Gorge “Lower” 1 day raft trip is the best rafting option for most participants as it includes a “warm up” on easier rapids. It also has some of the best rapids on the river. This section is between the Hwy 49 bridge in Coloma and Folsom Lake. This special offering includes camping at our Riverside camp and breakfast the following morning!
On our 1 day, 13 mile “Gorge” rafting adventure, we meet at our camp and transport you to the put-in location at the Hwy 49 bridge in Coloma. Here you will be given the usual pre-trip instruction and issued PFD’s and paddles. After boarding the rafts, there are 4 miles of Class 2 rapids to warm up on. We pull into camp for lunch, and you are served a great riverside feast prepared by your talented river guides.
We launch again after lunch, and on the remaining 9 miles the rafts enter the steep granite canyon known as the ‘Gorge’ where the rapids occur more frequently. There are many Class 3-3+ rapids like Fowler’s Rock, Satan’s Cesspool, Bouncing Rock, and Hospital Bar. Also numerous milder and fun rapids along the way and safe places in parts for swimming.
When Folsom Lake levels are high, we get a tow out with jet skis, rather than paddling flat water to the take-out. The rafting trip ends at Folsom Lake where you are served cold drinks and we bus the group back to the meeting location.
Young kids (ages 4-7) and more timid rafters are welcome to join groups on the first 4 miles of this trip.
Camping is set for the night before your trip with breakfast the day of your trip.
Please note that the flows in this video are a little higher than our typical summer flow.
