Burnt Ranch Gorge whitewater rafting trips are Class 5 and requires previous Class 4+ experience, and excellent swimming skills.
We typically meet at the Burnt Ranch Gorge campground and shuttle up to the Cedar Flat access area where you will be required to show your readiness for this trip with a swim test.
Raft California operates under permit from the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and is an equal opportunity service provider.
This whitewater adventure begins in Southern Oregon with 5+ miles of Class 3 rapids to warm up on before tackling the more challenging rapids! The Class 4 rapids begin with the gradient change and you enter into the steep canyon walls. The rapids are long and the water is big. We enjoy lunch on the river before crossing back into California at mile 11. On the remaining stretch after the border, the canyon opens up and the river mellows allowing for voluntary swims. We typically take out at Fishing Access 6 above Copco Lake. The shuttles to/from Weed are a bit long, and we will provide refreshments after the rafting trip.
Pre-requisits for this Upper Klamath River raft trip:
- Previous Class 3 paddling experience
- Strong swimming skills
The Middle Fork American River is set in a beautiful, rugged wilderness canyon in the Gold Country foothills. It has a very remote feel despite being close to Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. There are a couple of very memorable rapids on this run, the first being “Tunnel Chute”. This a man made, dynamited narrow chute with steep rocky walls. This leads to a big 6-foot drop and then through a 90-foot long rock tunnel! All this just 2.5 miles from put-in. Due to changes in this rapid during high water in spring 2017, the Chute is scouted on all trips and clients have the opportunity to walk around.
The formidable Ruck-A-Chucky Falls after lunch will provide plenty of entertainment. This Class 5-6 boulder slalom is a mandatory portage for clients – sorry no dollar amount can change that. We hike you up above the rapid and you can watch your brave and talented crew bring the rafts through. Once back on the raft there are numerous Class 4 rapids to follow.
