Final Results for the 2021 “Cans for SYRCL” Drive
How recycling at Tributary Whitewater Tours helps local non-profit
At the end of the 2020 rafting season an Employee of the year was voted into reign by her piers. Last year, Teagan Santin was the first Tributary Whitewater Tours employee to be endowed the additional honor of choosing a non-profit to benefit from the recycling cash collected from the following, 2021, season. Teagan is a senior guide who also manages Guide School instruction and planning. She grew up rafting with her family on local rivers like the American, Yuba and Klamath Rivers and studied Ecohydrology at UNR. Teagan chose the South Yuba River Citizens League, a non-profit determined to protect, restore, and celebrate the Yuba River watershed will receive the cash donation at the end of our 2021 season.
Cans were collected at our campground in Lotus, CA on the South Fork American River & our Maupin, OR Deschutes River Outpost. We designated “Can Cans” (only for Aluminum Cans). By educating our employees about the importance of collecting and soring the aluminum cans we were able to also share this info with our guests. Our “Can Cans” were clearly labeled to also share the importance of separating the recycling. Cans from our wilderness trips were also separated as were ones from our office.
Now comes the ever so enjoyable Can Smashing that was also inspired by Teagan! Who doesn’t love the satisfaction of crushing cans? A full smash with one blow is a real treat. So what did we do? In an effort to conserve space while collecting cans all season, we had CUSTOM CAN SMASERS made by our favorite local welder. These were made by repurposing old broken oars and welding them to 6″x6″ metal plates. They worked like a charm and provided tons of fun. (side note: these were only available to staff and not guests).
Now that you know HOW we did it… now we get to tell you the final tally!
$363.37 was the money we collected for the cans.
With a 100% company match, SYRCL will be receiving $726.74
Thru our years as a rafting outfitter we have continued to support not only SYRCL, but many other local and country wide non-profits. We now look to the future and that of our children as we find news ways to protect our natural resources, our access to recreation in the outdoors and educating others about these amazing groups.
