Kayaking & Rafting the Snake River: Everything You Need to Know

There’s a reason paddlers keep coming back to the Snake River. From the glassy, mountain-framed waters near Wyoming’s Tetons to the raw, canyon-carved rapids of Idaho’s Hells Canyon, this river runs through some of the most jaw-dropping scenery in the American West. Whether you’re a first-timer looking for a taste of whitewater or a seasoned paddler ready to go deep into one of North America’s great wilderness corridors, the Snake River delivers.

Here’s what you need to know before you go.

Rafting and Kayaking on the Snake River

We don’t offer standalone guided kayaking trips on the Snake River, but here’s the thing: you don’t have to choose between the two. Many of our guided rafting trips include the chance to hop off the big boats and take our tandem inflatable kayaks out on the water during the journey. It’s the best of both worlds – the comfort and safety of a fully supported expedition, with the freedom to paddle your own line when the mood strikes.

We run a range of trips on the Snake River to fit different interests and schedules:

Why Hells Canyon Is Unlike Anywhere Else

Let’s be honest – “deepest canyon in North America” sounds like a brochure line. But when you’re standing at the put-in and looking up at walls that dwarf even the Grand Canyon, it hits differently.

Hells Canyon is wild, remote and genuinely spectacular. The cliffs rise thousands of feet above the river, petroglyphs mark ancient campsites along the banks, and just when you’re lost staring up at the canyon walls, the rapids snap you back to the present. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel small in the best possible way.

Our rafting trips put in at the Hells Canyon Dam Visitor Center, and we take care of all the permits – you just show up ready to paddle.

What Our Trips Actually Look Like

All of our Snake River trips are multi-day expeditions, which means you’re not just rafting – you’re living on the river. Our guides handle all the camp setup, cooking and cleanup each day, so your only job is to enjoy it.

Expect gourmet riverside meals, nights camped under some of the darkest skies you’ve even seen, and days that alternate between exhilarating rapids and long, peaceful floats through canyon country. It’s the kind of trip people talk about for years.

A few things worth knowing before you book:

  • Skill level: The whitewater on our trips run Class III – splashy fun and beginner-friendly. Suitable for ages 7+ and non-swimmers welcome.
  • Gear: We provide all safety equipment including a personal flotation device (PFD), helmet and dry bag. For a full breakdown of what to wear and bring, visit our gear page.
  • Permits: Fully covered. We handle everything.

Ready to Go?

The Snake River doesn’t ask much of you – just show up, get in the boat and let the canyon do the rest. Whether you’re drawn by the rapids, the scenery, the food or just the idea of going somewhere genuinely off the grid for a few days, there’s a trip here for you.
