California Rafting on the Middle Fork American River

A spring and early summer rafting adventure above Shasta Lake, with continuous Class 3+ rapids.

We meet at Sims Flat Campground and put-in at the same location.

Rapids are frequent and fun, with the Class 3+ rapids of Shotgun, Rock Fence, Right Elbow and I-5 Hole being the most notable, all within the first 7 miles. There are numerous side creeks that flow into the river including some waterfalls. Lunch is served on river and many more exciting rapids are to be run like the White Horse rapid a few miles upstream from the take-out at Dog Creek. We will serve refreshments at take-out for your shuttle ride back.

We return to Sims Flat Campground (developed Forest Service camp with flush toilets) for your overnight stay. After setting up camp, enjoy appetizers while guides prepare dinner. A moderate amount of beer and wine are available for adults. Then relax around the camp fire or you may also enjoy world renowned fishing on a classic trout stream.

Day 2 options vary. Many opt to run the same rafting trip as this section of river is definitely a really fun ride and has no lack of action. Other options are dependent upon water levels and paddling skills of the group. Lunch is served on the river again whichever section is run. It is possible to raft a section upstream from Castle Crags with many more Class 3-4 rapids, but the borderline class 5 Mears Creek Falls (AKA Triple Drop) can be a deterrent as usually requires portaging. You will either raft into or get shuttled back to Sims Flat at the end of the day.

Tributary operates under permit from the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and is an equal opportunity service provider.
