Return to the main North Fork Yuba River Rafting Page

This Class 5 North Yuba River rafting trip is suitable only for those with solid Class 4 paddling experience. It requires excellent swimming ability. If you are up for the challenge it offers an intense free flowing spring run. In a high snow pack year we might be able to raft these sections into July.

We meet at our Tributary camp off Highway 49 near the Indian Valley campground. The shuttle travels north through the town of Downieville to the put-in at Union Flat. The first part of the trip is the 6 miles from Union Flat to Downieville, which contains nearly continuous Class 4-5 rapids. The most intense action on this section is from mile 2-3 in the Class 5 Moss Canyon, with 3 large drops ending with “Boss Moss” rapid and one big daddy hole.

We stop for lunch in the quaint town of Downieville and re-group for the next tough section of river. A quick scout of Rossasco Ravine from Hwy 49 might also be included.

The Downie River enters in Downieville adding considerably to the flow downstream on the North Yuba River. Guides will decide on the day if the Rossasco Ravine can be safely run depending on water flows and the paddling skills of clients.  The river flows for more than 1 mile through a long series of Class 5 rapids in Rossasco Ravine. This includes “Big Dummy” which ends in a huge hole. At higher flows this rapid may have to be portaged. At certain levels even the portage can be dangerous. This is followed by a string of more technical but less drastic drops. After all this action, you may enjoy the easy couple of miles of Class 2 rapids before the take-out at Goodyears Bar.

We serve some well deserved refreshments and we return you to your vehicles.

Wetsuits are typically required on this river trip. Rentals are $10 or you are welcome to bring your own.
