TRIP OVERVIEW

The Cal Salmon River is known for its big water, offering a full day of high-adrenaline Class V whitewater, and is a sought-after trip for experienced rafters. This trip is highly seasonal, as river flows depend on snowpack and melt, making the window for running this section short but incredibly rewarding.

The Nordheimer Run is famous for its relentless, non-stop whitewater, featuring a mix of Class 3+, 4, and intense Class 5 rapids. After a warm-up stretch, rafters quickly encounter Bloomer Falls (IV+), setting the tone for an action-packed day filled with countless Class IV rapids and two major Class V challenges. The run builds to an exciting ender with the final two rapids: Last Chance and Freight Train. Last Chance is a tricky rapid followed by Freight Train, a long, powerful rapid that funnels through a narrow rock-walled chute.

Between the Class V whitewater, rafters are treated to breathtaking scenery, and a well-deserved riverside lunch prepared by expert guides offers a chance to recharge. As the final few miles of the day mellow out, paddlers can catch their breath and reflect on their experience, solidifying the Cal Salmon as one of California’s most unforgettable whitewater runs.

Tributary Whitewater Tours operates under permits issued by the Six Rivers National Forest and is an equal opportunity service provider.
